{"id":8547,"date":"2018-10-25T20:15:05","date_gmt":"2018-10-25T20:15:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/rushkult.com\/eng\/scubamagazine\/?p=8547"},"modified":"2018-10-25T20:15:05","modified_gmt":"2018-10-25T20:15:05","slug":"tectonic-plates","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/rushkult.com\/eng\/scubamagazine\/tectonic-plates\/","title":{"rendered":"Here&#8217;s All You Need to Know What Scuba Diving Between Tectonic Plates in Iceland is all about"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><body><\/p>\n<p>Iceland is a fantastic place to travel to if you want to scuba dive between tectonic plates.\u00a0The island is literally splitting in half on the Mid Atlantic Ridge which is a divergent boundary that can be found between the plate of Eurasia and the plate of North America.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>North America is moving towards the west, and Eurasia is moving towards the east.\u00a0 Because of this, new crusts are being created on either side of the boundaries.\u00a0 <\/p>\n<figure class=\"center\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Scuba_diver_in_silfra\" src=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/rushkult.com\/eng\/scubamagazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/scuba_diver_in_silfra.jpg?fit=600%2C350&amp;ssl=1\"><figcaption>Scuba dive between tectonic plates in Iceland<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Photo Credit: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/27391739@N02\/3673050717\/\">r.gielen<\/a> <\/p>\n\r\n    <iframe\r\n      src=\"https:\/\/rushkult.com\/blank\/cards?location=Any+destination&sport=Any+sport\"\r\n      frameBorder=\"0\"\r\n      style=\"width: 100%; height: 500px\"\r\n    ><\/iframe>\r\n\n<p>This means additional mass is added to Iceland, but it also means that there is a rift.\u00a0 At some point in the future, Iceland will actually split into two separate pieces of land but luckily before this happens, divers have the opportunity to dive between these tectonic plates which is a dream come true for many.<\/p>\n<h2>Tectonic Plates Shifting in\u00a0Thingvellir National Park\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>If you want to really experience scuba diving between tectonic plates in Iceland, you must visit <a href=\"https:\/\/rushkult.com\/eng\/scubamagazine\/marine-reserves\">Thingvellir National Park<\/a>.\u00a0 The gully here is called the Silfra gully and is only a short drive from Reykjavik.\u00a0 <\/p>\n<p>In this gully, you will be able to witness the two continents that seem to be colliding but are in fact moving apart because of the shifting tectonic plates.\u00a0<br \/>\nMake sure you have some very good quality thermal insulated diving gear though because to say the water in Iceland is cold would be the understatement of the year.<\/p>\n<p>Before you begin to dive many checks will be performed on both you and your equipment to make sure that everything is okay.\u00a0 You will then have around 45 minutes to explore this fantastic area.\u00a0 <\/p>\n<p>You will come across narrow tunnels, sometimes as little as two meters wide.\u00a0 Amazingly, the water is incredibly clear and visibility is fantastic.\u00a0 Divers have reported being able to see for at least 100 meters, which is exceptional of course.\u00a0 <\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"600\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/XvdxYbK53W8\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Planning a scuba trip?
