About The Doctor's House

The Doctor’s House is a 200-year-old former Dutch and Ayurvedic hospital, situated on the south coast of Sri Lanka in the beautiful beach side village of Madiha.

It is the product of a couple of Australian guys whom openly admit to having zero hospitality experience, but simply aim to have a bit of fun whilst hosting and creating a good vibe.

For the surfers, we provide board rentals and we can arrange lessons upon request. With three excellent breaks within a short walking distance, you’ll love it! However, these waves are generally for the intermediate to advanced surfers and we advise that beginners head to some of the more protected nearby beach breaks..

Please note that during the low-season (Jun - Sep), the waves in Madiha can be a bit rough and wild, so we recommend surfing at the neighbouring more protected beaches.

The Doctors House is situated on the south coast of Sri Lanka, in the beautiful Madiha. We are a bar/restaurant/hostel with delicious wood-fired pizza's, great espresso coffee and very friendly staff!

The Doctors House is situated on the south coast of Sri Lanka, in the beautiful Madiha. We are a bar/restaurant/hostel with delicious wood-fired pizza's, great espresso coffee and very friendly staff!

The pristine coastline of Madiha is perfect for swimming and the area boasts some of the best surf on the whole coast. We have 2 dorm rooms, a 4 bed and and a 6 bed, with shared outdoor bathroom and shower facilities. The hostel accomodation is truly spectacular and there has been a huge focus on the use of natural materials and retaining the traditional style of the 200 year old building, whist adding a touch of contemporary finishes and creature comforts.

The feature piece is certainly The Doctor's House, which is a 200 year old colonial building which has served as an Aryuvedic hospital since it was built. It has been handed down through 5 generations of Aryuvedic doctors, and has been lucky enough to fall into the hands of two young Australians.

This Dutch colonial style building is truly one of a kind. One look at it, leaves you speechless, in saying that, its spooky, yet mysterious look makes you wonder how many stories it would have to tell. This building was one of very few which survived the 2004 tsunami.

We offer two types of rooms: Dorm rooms and private rooms.

OUR DORMS - We currently have 4 dorm rooms available (a 6 bed dorm and three 4 bed dorms). All dorms have unique shared outdoor bathroom facilities and they are complete with bunk beds, fans, mosquito nets and storage spaces. The buildings have been finished in a rustic style and there is a focus on the surrounding vegetation.
OUR PRIVATE ROOMS - We have 2 private bungalows available, which are fitted with a very comfortable queen sized bed, mosquito net and a fan. The bungalows also have a a private balcony, some storage space and a glamorous attached outdoor bathroom. The buildings have been finished in a conformable, rustic style and there is a focus on the use of natural materials, which fits in well with the existing old buildings and the surrounding landscape. These beautifully finished bungalows have nice decor and are perfect for couples or solo travellers who want a bit more privacy and comfort.
