Why Should I Get Certified as a Divemaster?

Are you ready to become a Dive Master? If you have reached a level of diving that qualifies you as a professional, if you are at ease at every type of dive site, and if you are ready to teach others how to dive, then a Divemaster certification may be perfect for you.

By becoming a Divemaster, you will be able to plan, organize, direct, and supervise dive expeditions during which you will take other divers out to dive sites and act as their guide and leader. You can also become an assistant instructor in dive courses of all levels, or you can use it as a step towards becoming an official instructor that directly teaches other divers who are seeking certification.

Becoming a Divemaster: What You Will Learn and What You Will Do

You will receive Divemaster course materials that include manuals, books, and accessories. Usually, these types of courses incorporate independent study with classroom study. While training to become a Divemaster, you will learn how to solve dive problems and perform your duties with confidence and competence.

In addition to learning how to help others improve their diving skills, you will improve your own at the same time. Your stamina will increase and your skills as a scuba diver will become even more effective.

You will then take everything that you learned in the classroom and put it to use in the real world by fulfilling an internship requirement, or, in place of an internship, a series of training exercises that would be the equivalent to an internship.

This portion of the course could have you working with real students who are studying for their own dive certifications on various levels, so you will get to meet these individuals and work directly with them, teaching them everything they need to know to succeed as a confident diver in all types of diving environments, from reef dives to wreck dives and night dives.

Becoming a Divemaster: Prerequisites

You should be physically fit before enrolling in the Divemaster course because this training will test your stamina and strength more than other dive certification courses. You will even be required to submit a signed medical statement from your physician. You also need to be at least 18 years of age or older to enroll.

In order to become a Divemaster, you must first complete the Open Water Diver course, then the Advanced Open Water Diver course, and finally, the Rescue Diver certification course. In addition, as with the Rescue Diver course, you need to become certified in CPR and First Aid as well.

Different diving associations have varying requirements with regards to prerequisites for the Divemaster course. However, you typically need to have logged between 40-60 dives (40 is the minimum to begin the course, but you need 60 in order to complete the certification process).

You should also be knowledgeable in subjects including diving equipment, dive planning, water skills such as swimming tests, and even physiology or physics. Keep in mind that many of the requirements necessary for the Divemaster course will already have been attained by working through the previous levels of diver certification.

Becoming a Divemaster: What You Will Need?

As with all other dive certification courses, you will need to have, and preferably own, all of the basic scuba diving gear, as well as scuba accessories, including a compass, dive watch, dive slate, and dive knife.

Also, you will need to devote quite a bit of time to this course, as it can take up to two months to fulfill all the requirements.
