Koh Lipe, a small tropical island paradise located in the Andaman Sea in Thailand and is part of the famous Tarutao National Marine Park. Scuba diving is one of the main attractions in Koh Lipe. The marine park where Koh Lipe is in is made up of 51 islands, which are found in the southern part of the Andaman Sea and are located near the Thai-Malay border. Some of the islands that are part of the marine park include Koh Tarutao, Koh Adang, Koh Rawi, Koh Dong. You should be able to dive the best reefs in the park from a longtail boat. There are multiple scuba dive centers who would like to take you on a dive or 2.

In total, the Tarutao National Marine Park measures 1,490 square kilometers, and Koh Lipe is one of the main entrances to the park.

The Reason for the Marine Park

Scuba Divers love to visit Koh Lipe because the waters off this island, as well as those off nearby islands, are clear, calm, and tranquil, and they are filled with diverse marine life. Therefore, these islands offer divers once-in-a-lifetime experiences underwater.

In addition, these islands offer safe havens for a variety of land animals, including mammals, reptiles, and birds. The rainforests of the islands within the Tarutao National Marine Park are beautifully pristine environments that are essential to the survival of a large variety of animals.

The Marine Park is meant to protect not only the islands themselves, but also the beaches and coral reefs that surround the many islands within the park’s borders.

Koh Lipe is blessed with pristine dive sites that house an abundance of marine species, from a variety of tropical fish, to tiny seahorses and shrimp, sharks, rays, and more. It is no surprise, therefore, that Koh Lipe and other islands within the Tarutao National Marine Park are so popular with divers from around the world. At the point of writing this Koh Lipe was not yet developed as a mass tourism destination like the famous Islands Phuket or Koh Samui.

History and Development of the Koh Lipe Marine Park

The Tarutao National Marine Park was established in 1974, with the main goal of protecting and preserving some of Thailand’s most valuable and naturally beautiful treasures. The park also preserves many cultural and historical sites.
Development throughout the islands is prohibited, though exceptions have been made for Koh Lipe, thanks to the growing demand by tourists. However, the exemption from the laws meant to protect the island only allows for moderate development, always keeping the goal of conservation in mind.
